Growing up in Italian families, food was always the center of attention. We celebrated holidays, birthdays and other special occasions where our favourite comfort foods were central to our celebrations. We prepare wholesome food, out of a desire to love and nurture our loved ones and ourselves. We could have the best intentions and thinking that we are eating well, but our choices can compromise the gut.

Our gut health impacts all of our body systems, and can lead to many symptoms such as:

  • anxiety
  • constipation
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • congestion
  • depression
  • fatigue
  • infertility
  • joint pain
  • mood swings
  • stomach pain
  • inflammation

 

There are many ways that we can support our gut health – regular sleep, stress management, social connection and doing things that we love.

 

Another key strategy to support our gut health is to explore any foods that are negatively impacting our digestion. In the Healthy Comforts cookbook, we eliminate the most common food sensitivities, and replace them with healthy fats, vegetables and a moderate amount of high quality protein. By eliminating the common allergens after 4-6 weeks, a person can better identify what food sensitivities exist, and slowly integrate them back into the diet to see if reactions occur.
